Parking Development Strategy

Additional Considerations

  • Regulations/levies concerning private vehicle ownership have not been associated with parking regulations in India. For example, in Japan, a certificate assuring an available parking space, issued by the traffic police, is necessary on purchase of a vehicle. Such a regulation may be applicable as motorization develops in India.
  • Priority for the disabled, coordination of deliveries, motorcycles and bicycle parking, and waiting spaces for paratransit are important cases to consider. Details are shown in Section V.
  • Mass transit systems – both road and rail based - will become a reality in most medium- sized Indian cities over the next 10–20 years. Provision of parking facilities at the terminals/stations may be used as an incentive to use such systems. Integration of parking facilities in the medium and long term would provide a convenient and efficient mass transit system for commuters.
